I woke up this morning, excited for another day of Mosaic. The past two days had been full of learning, exploring, and new friendships. When I arrived at the Spartan Daily newsroom, we all gathered in a room where breakfast was being served and newspapers were being distributed. While stuffing our faces with cereal, milk, and fruit, we focused our attention on a copy of today’s Mercury News. The biggest story of the day was the Warriors parade the day before. Other stories included news about the Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un meeting about further communications between the United States and North Korea. In local news, there was a story about the new San Jose State University baseball coach. After reading the stories individually, we discussed them as a group and went over the reading quiz that was distributed at the beginning of the news reading session.
After we finished reading and discussing the news, we returned to our tables and continued working on our stories. After about an hour, members of our group that went to the Warriors parade spoke about their experience taking pictures and meeting the players. A former photographer from the Mercury News, Jim Gensheimer, gave us a lesson on newspaper photography and smartphone photography. I learned a lot about the role of pictures in a newspaper as well as how to take the best possible photo of a certain scene. He wrapped up his presentation by demonstrating the process he goes through when taking a photo by taking a picture of a stuffed gnome sitting on a chair.
After the presentation, we spent the rest of the day working on our stories. My story is about the path homeless students take to get into college. I traveled down to the Bill Wilson Center, hoping to interview some of the teenagers living there. Although I was not allowed to conduct an interview, I was able to meet some of the teenagers at the drop-in center. They were all extremely friendly and welcoming. After returning back to San Jose State University, I continued finding and contacting more sources. While working, we discussed our stories as well as how much progress we had made in conducting interviews. We also discussed our musical preferences and our favorite songs at the moment.
My third day at Mosaic was definitely a blast. I learned more information regarding the world of journalism. I also first hand experienced the process of setting up and conducting an interview. My friendship with the rest of the group definitely deeped over the course of the day through conversations and helping out one another. I am definitely extremely excited for the next week and a half.
