Mosaic 2019 Summer Journalism Workshop

The 26th annual Mosaic high school summer journalism workshop will be held from June 10 to June 21, 2019. It is open to students who have completed at least a year of high school, but have not yet begun college, by June 2019.
The workshop will be held every day for two weeks. It will begin with a mandatory orientation for students and their families the afternoon of Sunday, June 2, at San Jose State University. After that, sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday, June 10 to Friday, June 21 in the Spartan Daily newsroom on the San Jose State campus. Class will be held daily, including Saturday, June 15. Students will take a field trip to San Francisco on Sunday, June 16. The workshop may include an evening session or two with dinner, guest speakers and excursions. Mosaic staff will provide transportation home from evening sessions.
Mosaic offers an introduction to reporting, news writing, photography, videography, web posting and blogging. Your Mosaic class will produce a print and online newspaper.
Teachers will be current and former journalists, assisted by Mosaic alumni who are college students or recent graduates. The student-adviser ratio will be approximately 4:1.
While we will have some lessons in the morning, Mosaic students will mostly learn by doing the projects that they choose.
The workshop will be conducted like a day camp. There will be no overnight stays on campus.
Mosaic is free of charge to students. We do require that you have a cell phone that you can use for reporting and taking photos and videos. Your work will require a laptop; if you do not have one, we will help arrange for you to borrow one. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. We are funded by grants from foundations, private donors, alumni, and by support from the Bay Area News Group, the parent organization of the Mercury News.
We provide bus tokens for those needing transportation.
The workshop will culminate with a field trip to the Mercury News newsroom, and with the production of a print edition of student news stories, opinion columns and photographs. Student work also will appear online.
